Judy Garland's voice keeps murmuring through my day, infecting my thoughts with a little holiday melancholy
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
Is this the most cynical and depressing Christmas song ever?...and yet now, somehow, I get it. I'm muddling, I'm muddling.
As an interesting tidbit, I guess most artists who have recorded this song, replace the last lyric with "Hang a shining star upon the highest bow"
I guess it wasn't "light" enough for everyone.
Frank Sinatra wanted to add this song to his "A Jolly Christmas" album and didn't find it "jolly" enough so he asked songwriter Hugh Martin to change it. The original song was sung by Judy Garland in the film "Meet Me in St. Louis"

This song makes me cry every year. I never knew about the original lyrics. MAN it makes it even sadder. I hate that I understand the song even more.
I never knew about the changed last line before. It *is* a sad song, whatever the lyrics.
That is a strangely depressing song. I never knew the lyrics had been changed either.
I think a lot of Christmas songs are a bit sad really, they have always had the tendency to make me feel that way even before all this.
